We therefore wanted to share our approach here at Hubble, so you can understand how we figure out what to do each time we look to move office.

We at Hubble typically sign 6-month contracts with a 3-month break so we can remain agile over where and how we work as the team and preferences change.

But how do we figure out where to go and what to do? Well, there are a few steps that we always take so we can understand what everyone wants out of a new office.

Step 1: Survey the Team 📃

Ahead of our most recent move, we surveyed our 68-person team to find out how often they’d like to use the main office, and where they’d like it to be.

This was a great way of benchmarking how everyone felt about the office setup before we actively started our search — we were able to take these learnings and refine our setup.

To conduct the survey, we used a simple Typeform to ask everyone:

  • How many days they planned on going into the office
  • Where they’d like the new office to be
  • If there were any improvements they’d like us to make
  • How often they planned on using the Hubble Pass to access on-demand workspaces

Step 2: Analyse the Responses 🤓

Once the survey results are in, it’s time to look for any trends.

  • How often do people plan to go into the office?
  • What locations keep coming up?
  • What amenities are people hoping to get from the new office?

For us at Hubble, it was clear that we needed a core HQ space with around 30 desks as we could see that around 50% of the team planned on using the office on a regular basis.

Step 3: Think Outside the Box 🧠

We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again: the notion of the traditional office is dead, and the concept of work has become completely unbundled in recent years. 

Work is no longer something that happens Monday-Friday, 9-5. It’s a distinct set of activities which each demand their own distinct environments, so we wanted to ensure that we factored this into our decision making, and you should too.

From past experience, we knew that we’d need to factor in the days where near enough 100% of the company would like to be in the office. For us, this includes the last Thursday of every month as we have a monthly social and expect almost everyone to be on that day.

And on every other day, we want the whole team to have access to key amenities that aid what we at Hubble call ‘The 3 Cs’ — Collaboration, Culture and Clients. This meant our new space would need to have state of the art meeting rooms for regular use, plus event space and breakout areas to enable all three.

Step 4: Assess Your Options 🏢

After scanning the market for the best and most suitable options for our criteria, we ended up taking an office with Fora in Spitalfields, whilst giving the team unlimited access to over 1,000 on-demand workspaces worldwide via the Hubble Pass alongside this.
